Lyn Tieu will give a Ling Lunch talk on Sept. 24th, 2013 titled Children can compute ‘any’ free choice inference.
According to some theoretical proposals, free choice inferences and scalar implicatures are a unified phenomenon (cf. Fox, 2007). Adult processing studies however have found a difference in adults’ processing of free choice inferences and that of scalar implicatures (Chemla & Bott, 2012). In this series of studies, we investigate children’s ability to compute free choice inferences with disjunction and free choice indefinites under existential modals.
