Call for papers

We are pleased to announce the 36th annual conference of the Israel Association for Theoretical Linguistics (IATL), which will take place virtually at Bar Ilan University on July 11-13, 2021. The conference will consist of a general session and a special session on bilingualism. Talks will be 30-minute long plus 10 minutes for discussion.

General Session:

We invite submissions of abstracts for presentations of previously unpublished research in all areas of theoretical linguistics, including, but not limited to: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and computational linguistics.

Special Session – Bilingualism and Theoretical Linguistics:

Research on bilingualism has a long history of using formal linguistic theory to address acquisition / maintenance of features and syntactic structures in the two languages of bilingual speakers. This work challenges Chomsky’s original notion of an ”ideal speaker-listener”. Recent theoretically-motivated research has offered opportunities to reconsider fundamental constructs, using bilingualism to address theories which speak to the capacities and architecture of human language.

We invite theoretically informed submissions of abstracts for talks or posters on topics in bilingualism, second and third language acquisition, including but not limited to: child and adult bilingualism, heritage bilingualism, bimodal bilingualism, incomplete acquisition and attrition, code-switching, language distance. Papers combining experimental methodologies with theoretical argumentation or implications for general linguistic theory are particularly welcome.

Abstract Submission Guidelines:

Abstracts should be no longer than two pages, including examples and references. Page format: A4, 2.54cm (one inch) margins on all sides, 12-point font, single line spacing. Submissions are restricted to at most one single-authored and one co-authored abstract per person.

The abstract should be submitted in PDF format. When submitting your abstract, please indicate whether you wish your abstract to be considered both for presentation at the general session and the special session, (which will be decided by the program committee), or if you prefer that your abstract be considered only for the main session or only for the general session.
